Have you seen the spectacular photography of Nina Chung in the spring edition of the quarterly, Movmnt?
Pretty amazing dance in motion.

B.C. comic strip originator Johnny Hart has passed. He also worked in collaboration on “Wizzard of Id”.
Johnny Hart’s passing is only a few days following the death of the co-producer of the “Wizzard…” strip.

Author/Journalist David Halverstam has also passed after the car he was riding in was broadsided. His books were
influential in getting the Us to get out of the Vietnam conflict. He also wrote of sports, with the last completed work
a biography of, New England Patriot football coach, Bill Belichick.

Goodbye Boris…. Boris Yeltsin, the Russian who led Russia into it’s age of democracy, has
also died. His legacy is a mixed bag however. Russia is now seen as a former superpower. Yeltsin also oversaw
the break-up of the former Soviet Union and the plunge into chaos of Chechnya, in it’s bid to become a breakaway
republic, the sacking of the Russian economy by private carpetbaggers, and widespread hyper-inflation which led
to impoverishment to millions. He was much loved, though, as he came to power, and considered a folk hero.
He was ill several times while in office but overcame it each time.

As I have a special interest in Ethiopia and other neighboring countries in the horn of Africa, I am adding a few pictures
to my short post (at the bottom of my blog, two entries back). Near to the hot arid Dankil Desert is the River Awash.
Some of it’s length has been included in the spectacular Awash National Park. It is a short distance from the “Land of
the Afars”, which I talked about in the other post.
They all wear a kalachnikov or other firearm and they are sometimes dangerous….
Young very beautiful Afar girls
The Danikil Depression is one of the lowest spots on earth, and nearly the hottest. Volcanic oozes are common.
A Painted Desert

A double team of forces—hot springs and liquid rock—combined to create the otherworldly landscape of Ethiopia’s Dallol volcano. Dallol is the world’s only volcano below sea level (minus 157 feet [minus 50 meters]) and the hottest place on Earth. Sulfur and mineral salts from upwelling springs create vivid colors.
The road to Assab. Nearby isolated port city in Eritrea. No doubt this is the road that my friends, discussed in the previous post,
warned me about.
“The Afar are an independent-minded people, and one who lay great stress on a man’s toughness, strength and bravery. Weaklings
do not survive in the Danakil Desert. In the past, a further requirement for achieving manhood was to kill a male member of
an enemy tribe and castrate the victim. The young Afar man was then looked upon with respect and entitled to certain rights,
such as marriage.”
Salt – the Afar gold, Dekemhare
–Afars of Gawene–
Afar hut. Many Afars are still nomadic.
The Afar grind grain like this, mix it with milk and bake it in an underground furnace. Bread and milk products are the staples of the Afar diet. They may butcher a cow for a special occasion such as a wedding.
Almost all Afar are Sunni Muslims. As children, they learn the Koran and religious practices from a village leader. Few rural Afar Muslims get deeper than the basic concepts of Islam, but they are fiercely protective of their religion.
The Afar homes of palm mats and wood pack easily onto camels to move to the next location.
Most Afar live in rural settlements of several clans. Clans make decisions by consensus, but clan leaders usually hold strong, persuasive powers over the clan.
The “Afar Triangle” at the intersection of Ethiopia, Djibouti and Eritrea is home to most of the world’s 1.5 million Afar people. Unlike much of Ethiopia, only a handful of them are Christians. Most are Muslim. These Afar women herd the family’s cattle, goats and sheep. The Afar travel with the seasons to find better grazing lands for their animals and to find and sell salt found in large quantities within the Danakil Depression.
-Some of the pictures depict, assumably, other people of the Danakil Desert area. All are from the northeast section of Ethiopia though, included with much of the tiny country of Djbouti, and eastern Eritrea.-
I’d like to say happy May 1st birthday to Ralph.
“Aww… Gee thanks.”
take care all. Blessings! JtheP

Wow, I learned a LOT from this post! And all of the pictures were beautiful as well.
My puppy is a long-haired chihuahua.. and from what I understand.. that is the smallest breed isn’t it? Well.. he’s not going to be one of the smallest, but still definately small! Poor little guy just got his second set of shots today! He’s not to happy
I am intrigued by the book’s title, and am really interested in finding out more about it!
Thank you so much for all of your support!!!!
RYC: No, I did not get married. But I’ve heard it’s a great stress inducer. I think for maximum effect, each alarm clock should be a clock radio, tuned to a different annoying morning talk show host. I hate morning talk shows, as a general rule, because I am grouchy in the morning, and I don’t want some annoyingly cheerful person cackling over not-even-close-to-funny jokes. Someday I want to host a morning talk show. “Hi, this is Anita, from ‘Before the Coffee’ where cheerfulness is banished, and we won’t greet you with “Good morning” because it usually isn’t.”
Beautiful representations here of a harsh place.
Well thank you, you are almost like a magazine, so much good stuff here!! War Clouds on the Horn of Africa….brings me back a bit. I am sorry the Afar are Muslim – sorry for them – as they seem a put-upon people by the West these days unless they have oil. I hope US can keep it’s big nose out of there, but I doubt it. Thank you for the link to the photos, I wanted to grab all of them and use them for painting ideas, will be checking my cache, honest, the finished product would take only the underlying ideas….You are right about the Afari women being beautiful. You can see the Aryan (India) in them as well as the Semitic…they must have been a trading people for centuries. Would it be right to call them afro-shirazis?
ryc: It really entirely depends on how prominently useful her ‘fixtures’ are in the first place.
I dont think that I have consumed some much knowledge since I was in school… … I have questions… so what you are saying is…. marshmellows are the key to my office domination….? *takes out notebook*
Thanx…..*picks up a gallon of beans from Costco*
Wow, those African pictures you have here are truly amazing! It’s a fascinating part of the world, isn’t it. In spite of the suffering, the people continue to cope and live in places where nature displays its best!
I hadn’t heard about the BC creators passing away. So sad – - I always enjoyed that strip. And Yeltsin will be truly missed as well. He wasn’t perfect but he has earned the respect of many.
Have a super weekend!
haha thanks :p been a while since lx fell so hard for someone.
i love how you don’t lose your sense of humor tho
God bless
*chuckle* unfortunately her boxing career was short lived- now she’s working for boeing and flagging so she’s pretty busy!
oh, the diversity!
Happy belated Birthday! I don’t know how I missed this post. You slipped under my radar… I’ll try not to met it happen again. lol
I had no idea you had another site… I do too… I don’t thnk I would invite Jesus there though. lol
Have a great night mister. Ang
Oh… I really enjoyed all of the pictures and information. thanks
ryc: I don’t even have to nightwalk to have a valid worry about skunks. The last time I saw one it was right outside my front door. Until it was very close I mistook it for one of my cats.
Whenever I visit your site it always meakes me smile……you have great depth and bredth in your interests.
I love the dance pics. They portray the female form in such beauty……..and the cultural shots are a real eye opener.
RYC; it is a branch from a curly oak tree. German women hang branches of this stuff from the ceilings in their homes and then decorate them according to the season and the festival. Easter having just come and gone; mine was covered in little ceramic chickens and chocolate eggs etc…..carnical time saw it covered in streamers and party poppers and valentines had it drapped in paper flowers and choclate hearts….
Tomesara.
I don’t think I’ve ever been asked so often if I’m pregnant…haha… NO!
Beautiful pictures
RYC: I don’t think anything rhymes with ‘orange’!
